A desktop tool for large photo and video libraries
Media Suite · My own product · 2024
Thousands of photos and videos end up scattered across folders, drives and backups. Nobody knows what is a duplicate, what is missing, or why the hard drive is always full. Media Suite is an all-in-one desktop tool for managing, organizing and processing a media library.
In numbers
- Time: my own library of 1.2 TB sorted in about 40 minutes, a job of around 30 hours by hand.
- Money: 410 GB freed, so no new drive (about €100) and about €4 a month less cloud storage.
- Errors: 14 corrupted backup copies and 3,100 duplicates found, and 0 files lost: nothing is deleted before you see the list.
- Adoption: about 240 downloads on itch.io.
- Scale: 62,000 photos and videos on 4 drives, checked at about 2,000 files a minute.
What it does
- Sorts photos and videos into separate folders automatically.
- Compares backup copies to catch missing or corrupted files.
- Shrinks videos with batch encoding, in one click.
- Resizes or converts images in bulk to free up space.
How it works
It started with my own family’s photos: 1.2 TB on 4 drives, with no idea which copy was the real one. Media Suite is written in Python. It reads the date a photo was taken from the file itself, not from the folder it happens to be in, and sorts by that.
To check a backup, it compares a fingerprint (a checksum) of every file with its copy. A file that is missing, or whose fingerprint differs, is listed before you delete anything. Videos are re-encoded with FFmpeg to a modern format that keeps the same quality at around a third of the size.

Four buttons, one for each job.
On my own library it found 3,100 duplicates, 14 corrupted backup copies and freed 410 GB.
